Why am I suddenly cuckoo for crochet?
Back in May of 2022, I got Covid and never fully recovered. I have struggled with all kinds of symptoms the past few years, from extreme fatigue and insomnia, light sensitivity, screen, sound, and motion sensitivity, inability to exercise without getting physically ill, etc.
Because of my lack recovery, 6 months ago, I was forced to make some hard choices. One of the things that helped me both cope with those changes and deal with my Long Covid symptoms (CFS) was crochet. And it's been helping.
I do have some theories as to why it has been so helpful, like I now reach for a crochet hook instead of my phone, thus reducing my screen time. But instead, I want to list some reasons why you, too, might want to become a weaver or magic.
1)Crochet/knitting will reduce your screen time
2)it will connect you to your creativity
3) it will help you to be more present and mindful
4) it will calm you and reduce your anxiety
5) it will curb your ADHD (if you have it)
6) it is something you can do before bed as a way to ease you into sleep
7) it will give you a new challenge. -- learn something new
it's something you can create personal goals and challenges around
9) it can help you make friends. There are plenty of clubs and groups in your community-- trust me
10) it can be a way for you to give back to your community.-- Like I am doing with the chemo hats
11) it will help you feel more connected to the stuff in your life. -- from a coffee coaster to a sweater, when you make it, you care for it.
12) your kids (if you have them) will be surrounded by weird hand-made toys. The Sorting Hat from Hogwarts, throwing stars, a fishtank full of Finding Nemo characters instead of actual fish!
13) Lastly, it is something you can shock people with while waiting in a doctor's office. -- while everyone else is scrolling with boredom, you can make your neighbour a set of mittens.
So give it a go.
And feel free to reach out if you have questions
Stay Awesome :)
Ashley
